RESEARCH TEAM

Together, we conducted research with 44 Syrian families living in Lebanon. We aimed to examine their diverse experiences and explore the relationship between mobility and well-being


Bree Akesson

Sean Doherty

Sean is a Professor at Wilfrid Laurier University and Chair of the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies. His research on health geography focuses on human activity and travel behavior, with a specific interest in using Global Positioning Systems (GPS) as a research methodology. David "Tony" Hoffman

Tony is a senior lecturer at the University of California in Santa Cruz, where he teaches courses on children living in situations of extreme risk.  He was visiting faculty at the American University of Beirut during this project.

Kearney Coupland 
Research Coordinator- Canada

Kearney helps lead data analysis and dissemination for this project. She is a PhD student in the Geography Department at Wilfrid Laurier University. Her research interests are informed by her training as a landscape architect and explore how people experience and adapt to changing environments in response to conflict and climate change.
Samia El-Joueidi
Research Coordinator- Lebanon

Samia is a Master of Public Health candidate at the University of British Columbia. Her interests are in maternal and child global health, working on family support systems during extended displacement, informal refugee education, health maintenance systems, developing civil societies and peace-building efforts, and effective management of NGOs during crisis situations.
Alli Myles
Research Assistant, GIS Ingenue

Alli completed her Bachelor of Environmental Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University, and is currently pursuing her Master's of Climate Change at the University of Waterloo. Alli has an interest in working with GIS data, allowing her to assist with the collection and analysis of the spatial and mobility data for the project. 

Dena Badawi
Research Assistant

Dena leads the qualitative data analysis and partaking in the writing and dissemination of this research. Dena completed her Honours Bachelor of Science at the University of Waterloo, jointly studying Biomedical Science and Peace & Conflict Studies. Dena is passionate about bridging these fields to improve health, health access, and health equity for refugee families.
Ila Schoop Rutten
Research Coordinator

Ila is pursuing a Master's of Human Rights and Humanitarian Action at Sciences Po, Paris. While working in Lebanon, Ila helped with Out of Place's research coordination and later designed this website.
Lauren Hawthorne
Research Assistant

Picture
Lauren is a graduate student at Wilfrid Laurier's Faculty of Social Work. Her research focuses on the intergenerational, co-constructed experiences of children and families. Lauren supports this project as research assistant to Dr. Bree Akesson.
